NORTHERN COUNTRY
Wherever you are in the world tonight
I wonder if you feel what I feel
Wherever you go in your head tonight
I wonder if you hear what I hear
Say it’s only the sound of my beating heart
It’s only the sound of the long, cold night wind
Wherever you are lie, where you lay your head
I wonder if you ever hear my cry
And as I lie here in sleeplessness
I know I something think I hear you call
But it’s only the sound of my loneliness
It’s only the sound of the blood running round my veins
And if I wait for your call
Will you find me
I’m like a ghost in my own time
Living in this cold, grey northern country
There never could be a night so long as this
Minutes into hours into the end
But I’m listening to a music exquisite
It’s beauty is my power and my prayer
And it’s only the sound of my beating heart
It’s only song of the long, cold night wind
TIME
You put the fear behind you, yet you’re still aware
That one day you might finally cease to care
And never know it’s day or night, or if you’re hot or cold
Or if you’re growing up or growing old
Time and time and time and time again
You swear you’ll never get this way again
Time and time and time and time again
You know you’ll never get this way again
Anyone can tell you there’s the red, and there’s the green
It’s when you lose the difference in between
Love and joy and beauty are all lost to shades of grey
It’s like a veil gets drawn against the day
Time and time and time and time again
You swear you’ll never get this way again
Time and time and time and time again
You know you’ll never get this way again
Time and time and time and time again
You swear you’ll never get this way again
Time and time and time and time again
You know you’ll never get this way –
When you wake up crying and you don’t know where you are
And fighting down a rising, cold hysteria
You don’t know where it’s come from
You don’t even know its name
But it won’t make you happy
And it won’t keep you sane
Time and time and time and time again
You swear you’ll never get this way again
Time and time and time and time again
You know you’ll never get this way again
THE MOON AND THE SUN
She’s ever rising, ever falling
The moon and the sun
Made of water, made of sand
Running right through your hands
And it’s only, only for a little while
Only, only for a little while
She will be there for you
Be the one that is yours
You’ll accept nothing less
And expect nothing more
And only, only for a little while
Only, only for a little while
See the face that she’s wearing today
Turn around when she’s dreaming tonight
To become something more when she wakes
What you offer to her she will take
She will be there for you
Be the one that is yours
You’ll accept nothing less
And expect nothing more
And only, only for a little while
Only, only for a little while
She’s the mother and then she’s the child
She’s the daughter, the sister to some
She’s your lover and then she’s your friend
She’s the night and the day
Moon and sun
She is many and one
She is more than you know
You’ll accept nothing less
And expect nothing more
And only, only for a little while
Only, only for a little while
She will be there for you
Be the one that is yours
You’ll accept nothing less
And expect nothing more
And only, only for a little while
Only, only for a little while
Only, only for a little while
Only, only for a little while
Only, only for a little while
ONLY HUMAN
And if you are just who you think you may be
Well then you’ll know, you’ll know, you’ll know
Where’s the right and wrong
If anyone could tell you
You wouldn’t listen anyway
If anyone should offer you their time
Could you take it from them
And you’re used to your own company
But you know, you know, you know
That’s no way to stay
If anyone should ask you
Would you tell them everything
If anyone should offer you their heart
Could you give the same way
You’re so afraid you’re too far gone
But you know, you know, you know
You’ll find a way to be
If anyone can help you
Would you let them try
If anyone should open up their arms
Would you step inside
Nothing gets lost without something being gains
You know, you know, you know you need to change
So say you’re only human
And don’t live so all alone
And anyone that’s listening to these words
Do you recognise this?
UP IN THE AIR

Pass away the hours, hear the footsteps of the past
Walking up the stairs of time, knowing that I'm trapped
Cold winds of indifference persuade a movement south
Thinking that it's better there
The warmer climes that we seek out
Poor bird flies up in the air, never getting anywhere
And how much misery can one soul take?
Trying to fly away might have been your fist mistake
Oh poor bird
Oh poor bird
Picking petals off a flower
Loves me, loves me not
Is love another way to count the things you haven't got?
We wish the best to all our friends, young and old alike
When the dust has settled in the sky
Well, you can have anything you like
Poor bird flies up in the air, never getting anywhere
And how much misery can one soul take?
Trying to fly away might have been your fist mistake
Oh poor bird
Oh poor bird
Poor bird flies up in the air, never getting anywhere
And how much misery can one soul take?
Trying to fly away might have been your fist mistake
Oh poor bird
Oh poor bird
Oh poor bird
WASHINGTON SQUARE
Fly by night, across dark water
Over the clouds, through space and time
Come and look for me
By the arch and the wading pool
By the old men at the tables in the winter time
That's where I'll be
And I'm always here
In Washington Square Park
It's like two trains running in two tunnels
Suddenly all is light
And your train comes into view
Face so close, see your breath on the glass
I'll follow your eyes
As you veer away into the dark
And I'll still be here
In Washington Square Park
No, no, do not grieve for a story never told
You see, that I'm still the child
It's you who's growing old
You're growing old
And I'm always here
In Washington Square Park
NORTHSHORE TRAIN
Pale in the morning sunlight, the seabirds fly by the factories. The electric towers stand in lines on the water's edge. Silhouetted cormorant arched it's wings to dry them at low tide, yesterday afternoon. In the mist of morning, 5 o' clock, sister drives me to the station.
We talk and laugh as we wait, then embrace, then say goodbye.
In silent, slow motion I ride the train beside the ocean.
In silent, slow motion I ride the train beside the sea.
Many words are in my heart I'll never say and feeling incomplete I'm bound away and a deep red is the colour of the air today. So, we're riding through the hill town, watch the railway from your garden. Rollercoaster river train - now I look to see if I see her, from my window find the garden.
We're sailing past your house now, but I see the blinds are down.
In silent, slow motion I ride the train beside the ocean.
In silent, slow motion I ride the train beside the sea.
I am a lonely traveller in time, I'm counting out the years I'll never find.
And so sad and heavy is this heart of mine.
Well, we come at last to the city, you can feel its weight upon the ground. You wonder how to breath in an atmosphere of oil and noise.
This is where my father lives, though he was born beside the sea.
In silent, slow motion I ride the train beside the ocean.
In silent, slow motion I ride the train beside the sea.
THE MOUNTAIN
If you are my true friend
Then you'll listen
You see, I've been dreaming again
Looking for something
That's been lost
And these eyes have been a camera
They hold memories clear and fine
I'm turning away
And I remember
The way it was to live
Inside a small girl
To cast no shadow on the ground
But there is someone here with me
And he is tying
A red, red ribbon to a tree
Oh my mother
My good friend
I knew you so little then
And my sister
And my two brothers
We can still talk to each other
In the dark
So if today
Is such a long, lonely time away
Then I'll remember
The sound of snow
And I'll remember
The forest
And I'll remember
The Mountain
MERCURY
I walk through the graveyard
And a late snow is on the ground
The bones lying underneath the ivy
Black crow he flies
His shadow moves across the stones
The snow that holds my footprint melts away
I turn from the West Gate and I look to the East
I will await the coming dawn
To welcome the traveller home
I wonder do you hear me
Singing softly to myself
And I wonder do you recognise the tune
And times I’ve been so lonesome for another human sound
I have cried and I have shouted to myself
I turn from the West gate and I look to the East
I will await the coming dawn
To welcome the traveller home
Dawn to dusk and dust to dust
And days of mercury
In mind’s eye the time gone by
Is set like crystal
At end of year the days grow dim
You feel the time gone by
But you can’t hold on to Mercury
I turn from the West gate and I look to the East
While Earth awaits with opened arms
To welcome all travellers home
ONE STRING VIOLIN
Come, here the call, feel the beat
Of the shuffling drummer
And move, you will sway, you will dance
Though you feel like you’re dying
For these are the songs and they ways of the world
All that is lost can never be regained
The way that it is and the way it shall be
You will dance
And turn slowly turn, make an arc, to the one string violin
Your face is the mask that you’re broken inside
For these are the songs and they ways of the world
The stillborn loves and never-shall-bes
When trying sometimes is it’s only reward
You will turn
And hope is a word that you use when all hope has departed
And dreams – the country where your fears
For these are the songs and they ways of the world
With broken hearts with empty eyes
The weak and the strong will all join in the song
And will dance
LITTLE FOX
If I had the time to live over
Would I find the way to get it right
Would I say the words I really are meant to say
Would I change the things that I'd done
The voice calls
Come, come away little fox, little bird
Run away into the night
You will burn your eyes, you will burn your wings
If you go into the light
If I had the strength to begin again
Can I find which way to go
If my legs stay steady and my heart stays strong
Can I bend the road my own way
The voice calls
Come, come away little fox, little bird
Run away into the night
You will burn your eyes, you will burn your wings
If you go into the light
If I give the very best part of me
Will I have enough left for myself
And will I change when I turn around
Will I recognize my own name
The voice calls
Come, come away little fox, little bird
Run away into the night
You will burn your eyes, you will burn your wings
If you go into the light

FOLLOW
Rain again
Looks like it’ll never end
Looks like this city
Will wash away
Away – to the open sea
Tumble the buildings, bodies and trees
You follow (follow, follow)
What your heart says do my friend
You follow (follow follow)
What your heart says do
Float away from me (from me from me)
See your face out in the wave
Bow my head to insane circumstance
Open hands – let it all go
You follow (follow, follow)
What your heart says do my friend
You follow (follow follow)
What your heart says do
You follow (follow, follow)
What your heart says do my friend
You follow (follow follow)
What your heart says do
Line on my hand say, “Yes, this is how it shall be”
Read the facts there, the way they stand
Oh, I see your face still in the wave
On you go away from me
You follow (follow, follow)
What your heart says do my friend
You follow (follow follow)
What your heart says do
You follow (follow, follow)
What your heart says do my friend
You follow -
CRADLE
(Oh) Lift me in your arms
Cradle me like a child
I feel your heart
Sense your smile in the dark
NEEDLE’S EYE
Falling up, ride through the sky
Drawn by the moon
Through the needle’s eye
Pulled by my roots
Don’t understand
How I fell so far
How I lost the land
Head over heels
Breathing the foam
Thrown through the cloud
To the undertow
And falling up, ride through the sky
Drawn by the moon
Through the needle’s eye
The sun and rain
Have hollowed me
When the wind blows
It blows through me
You hear me sing
Like a sympathetic string
And this sound is all
That’s left of me
Falling up, ride through the sky
Drawn by the moon
Through the needle’s eye
